pROJECT DESCRIPTIONS
Water Resources
Ternium - Aquila ion mine. Regional Groundwater Model.
Project manager. Managed the preparation of a regional groundwater model (Groundwater Vistas software and Visual Mudflow) to analyze potential mining impacts to local and regional aquifers of an open pit expansion. Project included pour pressure analyses for open pit mining slope stability analysis. Work included processing 10 years of monitoring well water levels and surface water gauged water flows, the preparation of geological, conceptual, and numerical models. Prepared progress mid-term report presentation and one semifinal and one final presentation.
Coeur D’ Lane – Palmarejo gold mine. Regional Water Resources.
Project manager. Prepared surface and ground water supply evaluation for the Uruapa basin close to the Palmarejo gold mine. The project included geophysical survey of areas of interest followed by a water exploration drilling program that included with witness wells and pumping tests. Prepared runoff analysis for the Uruapa basin and preliminary design of reservoirs and supply pipeline. Report included estimated construction and operation cost.
Chesapeake Gold – Metates gold mine project. Regional Water Resources.
Project manager. Prepared surface and ground water supply evaluation for the Metates area basins surrounding the proposed Metates mine site. The project included design, installation, and monitoring of 8 surface water gauges, data processing quantification. A water exploration drilling program that included installation of monitoring wells. Prepared runoff analysis for the region and prepared three water supply scenarios including preliminary design of reservoirs and supply pipelines. Report included estimated construction and operation costs.
Ternium - Aquila iron mine. River Diversion.
Project manager and lead engineer. Prepared detailed analysis of flood control and river diversion options for regional watershed area to allow mine expansion. Project included preparation of preliminary flood control structure plans and the related construction costs for each drainage diversion options encompassing different configurations of channels, tunnels, culverts, and dams.
Coeur D ’Lane – Palmarejo gold mine. Infiltration Gallery.
Project manager and engineer. In charge of the design of an infiltration gallery next to a major river. The gallery was designed to produce 700 GPM and included collection wells and pumps, staging tank and related pipe fittings. The project included preparation of construction plans and specifications. Work included geotechnical drilling for hydrogeological exploration survey for site selection and to determine hydraulic properties of the site soils.
Fortuna Silver - San José silver mine. Water Supply.
Project engineer. Water supply study for a proposed silver mine. Project included regional water availability survey and the preliminary design of five supply options encompassing new reservoirs, 70 mile long supply pipelines and connections to existing public infrastructure. Developed alternatives analysis and option selection matrix.
Ternium - Esperanza iron mine project. Water Supply.
Project supervisor. Water supply studies for a proposed open pit iron ore mine. Supervised a team of hydrologists in the preparation of a regional groundwater model (Groundwater Vistas software and Visual Mudflow) to evaluate the use of groundwater for mineral processing. Also prepared a numerical model of a proposed network of water reservoirs (HEC-HMS-RAS) to evaluate the use of surface water for mineral processing. The project included three months of water exploration drilling program and stream gauge installations.
Argonaut Gold – San Antonio gold mine project. Water Supply.
Project Manager. Surface and groundwater studies to determine potential water supply capacity, floods, and environmental impacts. Project included floodplain delineation and flood control studies (with HEC-HMS and RAS). Also included the preparation of regional groundwater model (with Groundwater Vistas) to predict potential impacts from mining. Managed the construction of a monitoring well network to sample and establish water quality baseline. Important component of this multi-year project was water supply studies encompassing surface and groundwater sources.
Goldcorp – Peñasquito poly-metallic mine. Surface Water Control.
Project manager and lead engineer. Detailed analyses of the drainage diversion options to allow mining of this large open pit mine. Project included the design and preparation of construction drawings for selected option channels and related structures. Final design and construction includes 10 mile river diversion channel (50 foot base X ~15 feet deep) and about 30 miles of other surface water control channels.
Rio Tinto - Bingham Canyon copper mine. Seepage Control.
Project manager and engineer. Hydrogeological studies to determine options for seepage control at the open pit crest. Work included geotechnical drilling, sampling, geotechnical and geochemical testing of mine waste rock dumps and natural soils.
Army Corps of Engineers -Seven Oaks Dam.
Project engineer and quality control manager for the construction of a 510 feet tall rock-fill dam. Project includes the design and construction of two cofferdams and related CMP culverts, monitoring of downstream water turbidity and design and construction of turbidity mitigation structures.
Army Corps of Engineers - Lower Santa Ana River.
Construction project engineer and quality control manager for the construction of 5 miles of concrete lined river channel. Included elaboration of dewatering program to allow construction inside the riverbed. Construction included grading 5 miles of the Santa Ana riverbed and placing of 75,000 cubic yards of Portland cement concrete liner and sub drain system.
Asarco - Ray Complex. Detention Pond #1.
Construction Manager and lead engineer. Managed the design and construction of a potentially polluted storm water detention pond intercepting drainage coming down from the copper smelter. This project included, runoff analysis, design and construction of a geo-membrane (HDPE) lined impoundment, design and construction of 62” pipeline, and the design and construction of a 40 foot tall embankment with monitoring instruments.
Environmental
Asarco - Tacoma Smelter. Remedial Design.
Project Manager and lead engineer for the design of clay liner for on-site hazardous materials containment facilities in the environmental remedial project of a closed metal smelter site. Project involved design of site wide grading plan, under drain system, and site wide cap. This Superfund project included the design of a 2.0 million square feet site wide clay cap, capsule repositories of hazardous materials, post-remediation roadway alignments, development/foundation area fills, and the stabilization and remediation of a steeply sloped area.
Asarco – Ray Mine. Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plan.
Engineer in charge. Ray Mine SPPCCP, Ray Arizona (ASARCO) Spill prevention control and countermeasures plan for the entire mine facility. A required plan covering the control and prevention of the release of hazardous substances as defined in the Clean Water Act (CWA).
Asarco – El Paso Smelter. Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plan.
Engineer in charge. El Paso Smelter SPPCCP, El Paso Texas (ASARCO) Spill prevention control and countermeasures plan for the entire smelter facility. A required plan covering the control and prevention of the release of hazardous substances as defined in the Clean Water Act.
Odebrech – Seven Oaks Dam. Sediment Control Plan.
Civil/environmental engineer. Dam in San Bernardino Mountains. Seven Oaks Dam, San Bernardino California (U.S. Corps. Of Engineers) Preparation of a sediment control plan for the construction of the Seven Oaks Dam; a major flood control dam. Included soil characterization and soil/sediment monitoring programs.
Grupo México – San Luis Smelter and Refinery. Smoke Stack Environmental Impact.
Project scientist. Study of smoke stack plume impacts including soil characterization and detailed soil sampling program.
City of Tucson – Los Reales Landfill.
Project Manager. Construction of double lined geo-membrane landfill cell. Project included, site mass grading and excavation, cushion layers, leak detection sumps, and gas control facilities. Construction materials quality control: field and laboratory. Prepared successful construction cost bid.
Evergreen/Pinal Regional Airport – Paint stripping rack.
Project Manager. Reconstruction of paint stripping rack (containment facility) with double lined geo-membranes and pipes, leak detection sumps and raisers. Project included initial detection of underground contamination plume, the design of the remediation, and its construction. Prepared construction documents and performed all the construction administration.
Evergreen/Pinal Regional Airport – Wastewater treatment facilities.
Project Manager. Design of site waste water treatment facilities including double geo-membrane lined basins, leak detection system and gas recovery system. Project included initial detection of underground contamination plume, the design of the treatment facility and cost estimate
Chesapeake Gold – Metates Mine Project. Environment Monitoring.
Project manager. Prepared surface and ground water baseline monitoring program including the implementation. Design and construction of river flow gauge network of 14 monitoring stations and derivation of flow curves and yearly water volumes.
Freeport-McMoRan - Bisbee Mine. Waste rock drainage design.
Civil engineer. Drainage design for reclaimed area. In charge of the design of drainage channels and structures, including preparation of drainage report.
Ternium - Aquila Iron Mine. Regional Sediment Control.
Project manager and lead engineer. Project involved the sampling and chemical analysis of the site's sediments, study of the soil loss potential (RUSTLE) and designed of site wide sediment control structures.
Asarco – El Paso Smelter. Plant Closure.
Lead engineer. Smelter site remedial design for facility closure. Project included several area-wide caps, sub-drainage systems, and on site containment facilities. Soil mass balance analyses and soil characterization surveys.
Marana Regional Airport. Environmental Assessment.
Project Manager on the preparation of an Environmental Assessment for the construction of several airport airside and landside improvements.
Asarco - Oklahoma (Federated Metals). Brownfield Remediation.
Lead engineer for site wide cap and site infrastructure. Lead-zinc smelter site remedial design and brownfield redevelopment. Remediation design of smelter site for a proposed new Walmart store. Project included site-wide cap and formulation of related title deed restrictions, sub-drainage system and 60” RCP pipeline to connect to regional drainage network, and site cleanup.
Marana Regional Airport. Environmental Assessment.
Project Manager on the preparation of Environmental Assessment report for the construction of several airport airside and landside improvements.
Mechanical
Freeport-McMoRan – Hydraulic Audit.
Project manager and lead engineer for the review of the hydraulics of the leach solution pumping and distribution system. Project included a preliminary survey of the pipeline network and fittings, and hydraulic analysis with numerical simulation model (WaterCad).
Endeavor Silver - Guenacevi Mine. Underground Pump Station.
Project manager and lead engineer. Design of dewatering system for underground mine including three pump stations and the preparation of preliminary construction plans and specifications. Each pump station consisted of three high lift and high capacity pumps (1,800 GPM with 350 feet of lift) with 500 hp electric drive motors including related manifold and pipelines for dewatering 3 different ore bodies in an underground silver mine.
Goldcorp - Peñasquito Mine. HDPE Pipeline.
Project Manager and engineer. Design and preparation of construction drawings for 12 mile long collector pipeline for 8 pit dewatering wells, including hydraulic analysis of the interconnected well pump network with numerical simulation software (Water Cad).
Goldcorp - Peñasquito Mine. Pump Station.
Project manager and engineer. Design and preparation of construction plans and specifications for a 2,000 GPM pump station, including staging reservoir. Design included hydraulic analysis with numerical simulation software of the interaction of the pump station discharge since it is connected to the plant's pressurized main supply pipeline.
Marana Regional Airport. Fire Pump Station.
Civil Engineer. Lead engineer for the design of a fire suppression systems including pump house, two water supply wells, 1.5 million gallon steel storage tank, 3 miles of pipeline, hangar sprinkler systems, and runway fire hydrants. Prepared construction plans, specifications and cost estimate. Project also included the construction administration and oversight.
Goldcorp – Peñasquito Mine. Well Field.
Project engineer. Design and preparation of construction drawings and specifications for water well field HDPE pipeline collection network for ten 650 GPM production wells including wellheads and control rooms. Project included about 25 junctions and about 8 miles of collector pipeline network with redundant flow circuits numerically simulated and calculated with WaterCad software.
Geotechnical
Mi-Swaco - Greystone Mine. Tailing Dam Stability Analysis.
Registered Civil Engineer. Responsible in charge for the analysis of the slope stability of tailing dam (with Slope/w). The analysis was for dam decommissioning. Project also included geotechnical drilling, sampling and agency interactions.
Bonanza Gold – Copperstone Mine. Tailing Dam.
Project manager and engineer in charge. Design and construction of a 50 acre tailings dam including the preparation of construction drawings and specifications. The dam is a HDPE geo-membrane double lined tailings storage facility with a sub-drain pipe network and a leak detection system. The project included a lined water recirculation pond (1 acre), construction oversight, and approval negotiations with the Bureau of Land Management and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.
Scorpio Mining - Nuestra Senora. Tailing Dam.
Project engineer. Review and edits for 30 acre lined storage facility designs, preparation of site's water balance, and design of surface water control structures.
Mi-Swaco - Mountain Springs Mine. Tailing Dam Stability Analysis.
Registered Civil Engineer. Responsible for the analysis of the slope stability of tailing dam (with Slope/w). Project also included the preparation of a Spill Prevention and Countermeasure Plan. The stability analysis was for restart of operations of the dam. Site consists of industrial mineral mine with pit, dumps, concentration plant and tailing dam. Project also included, surface water studies and agency interactions.
LA Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Red Line Subway.
Civil Engineer. Engineering and construction review for the Red Line Subway tunnel, MTA, Los Angeles. Involved in the constructability review of the Red Line including several stations. Performed quantity take-takeoffs, prepared preliminary and conceptual construction drawings, and assisted principals and senior engineers in many phases of the review.
Magma Cooper Company, Lower Kalamazoo Ore Body Development.
Civil Engineer. Engineering design and preparation of construction drawings for 1.5 mile of bored tunnel for Lower Kalamazoo Ore Body Development, Magma Copper Co., San Manuel, AZ. Responsible for the design of the tunnel alignment and cross section and was in charge of the preparation of plans and specifications.
Rio Tinto - Bingham Canyon. Seepage Control.
Project manager and engineer. Geotechnical studies to determine options for seepage control at the pit crest. Work included geotechnical drilling, sampling, geotechnical and geochemical testing of mine waste rock dumps and natural soils.

Project manager and engineer. Design and preparation of construction drawings of six (1 acre) lined reservoirs to intercept surface water and limit groundwater recharge from rain and snow.
Army Corps of Engineers -Seven Oaks Dam.
Quality control manager and project engineer for the construction of a large rock-fill dam. Included the elaboration of Total Quality Control program for the construction of the 5 million cubic yard main embankment. Also prepared the Master Construction Schedule (Primavera). In charge of the review and approval of all initial construction submittals and participated on the design of haul roads, QC laboratory and cofferdams.
Army Corps of Engineers - Lower Santa Ana River Project.
Construction project engineer and quality control manager for the construction of 5 miles of concrete lined river channel. Included elaboration of the quality control program for grading 5 miles of the Santa Ana riverbed and placing of 75,000 cubic yards of Portland cement concrete liner and sub drain system. Coordinated subcontractor's work and supervised concrete production and placement.
